Summer’s Out, School’s In!
Welcome back to the classroom! After some much needed R&R it’s time for teachers and staff to head back into one of the most important jobs there could possibly be: Connecting with and educating our youth. Many of us are aware through our lived experiences that this is no easy task. Meeting the education, social, emotional, and safety needs of each student is a tall order. So here are 3 things to help kick-off your classroom connection with tomorrow’s adults:
Saying names properly
I know, I know. This seems like a given. Many of our students have unique pronunciations, nicknames, go by their middle names, or want to use a name that might not make sense to us but makes sense to them. Taking the time and making the effort can go a long way in making a child feel like you are already getting to know them.
2. Inclusive Ice Breakers
Instead of asking,”Where did you travel this summer?” And, “Where would you most like to travel in your life?” The reality is, many kids do not travel during their off time. Asking a question framed as a future plan allows everyone to have an answer and be included.
3. Awareness, Patience, and Understanding
Some kids are coming back to school refreshed, eager to learn (or not), excited to show off their new wardrobe and school supplies, and reconnect with their friends. Other kids are escaping to school where they know they’ll be met with meals, warmth, and adults who treat them with compassion. Keeping our awareness up for signs of abuse and neglect can allow us to understand behaviors in the classroom, emotional dysregulation, and help each of us tap into our patience as the school year is starting.
